This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to students and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education if local or national restrictions require students to remain at home. There are different remote education responses for school closure, whole class isolation and individual or small group isolation. Please find the information for each response below.

Remote education for individual or small groups of students self-isolating

Where individual students or small groups of students need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, how remote education is provided will differ from the approach for whole groups. This is due to the challenges of teaching students both at home and in school.

If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, what remote education will they receive?

If a child needs to self-isolate they can instantly access their remote education through Teams. Students have access to Distance Learning lessons that match the in school lessons in the Class Materials tab of their class team. Students should select the relevant half term, the relevant band & week and then work through the lessons that have been uploaded for that day or week. Students should also work through their Home Learning tasks, which are assigned online via Teams, Hegarty Maths, Bedrock (English) and Pearson Active Learn (languages). Students will also receive a phone call from a member of the pastoral team to ensure that they can access their learning. Students will have access to the weekly online assemblies and any virtual enrichment or interventions.

Remote education for whole classes or year groups self-isolating

If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, what remote education will they receive?

Where a whole class is required to work from home, their lessons will become live lessons with their teacher through Teams. The lessons will be recorded and saved on Teams in case anyone misses the lesson due to home circumstances. The lesson PowerPoint will also be saved in the Class Materials tab of their class team. Students should also work through their Home Learning tasks, which are assigned online via Teams, Hegarty Maths, Bedrock (English) and Pearson Active Learn (languages). Students will have access to the weekly online assemblies and any virtual enrichment or interventions.

Remote education for School Closure

The remote curriculum: what is taught to students at home

A student’s first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching.

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of students being sent home?

The instant remote education that we provide is for students to access their Distance Learning lessons through Teams in the Class Materials tab. Students should select the relevant half term, the relevant band & week and then work through the lessons that have been uploaded for that day or week. These lessons are in line with the learning taking place in school.

There are two ways to access your lessons.

In the Class Materials tab at the top of the screen. If you can’t see the tab, please select ‘more’.

In the Files tab at the top of the screen. You will then see a folder called Class Materials.

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we have needed to make some adaptations in some subjects. For example, (practical lessons in Drama have been adapted into oracy based and written tasks or a read through of scripts, Core PE lessons have been replaced by live fitness sessions).

Remote teaching and study time each day

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

Secondary school-aged students not working towards formal qualifications this year.

Live lessons will follow the usual school timetable. Live lessons will be between 30 – 40 minutes long & students will have additional tasks to complete or Home Learning to complete in the extra time.

Home Learning will be set in line with the usual school policy and will be set on TEAMs, Hegarty Maths, Bedrock (English) or Pearson Active Learn (Languages).

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

We recognise that some students may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those students to access remote education:

  • Devices were issued to families that requested support through our Digital Access Survey.
  • PP Laptops were issued to any PP students that either did not have computer equipment at home or were sharing with multiple family members.
  • Internet Dongles were provided to PP students.
  • Data SIM packs were provided to any PP students that completed a survey and stated that they did not have internet access at home.
  • Information was shared with all families regarding how to request a Data boost from the government.
  • Calls made to all families to check on computer and internet access.

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach students remotely:

  • Live teaching (online lessons) following the usual school timetable
  • Recordings of live lessons are posted on TEAMs & Distance Learning PowerPoints are available for all lessons, which include video/audio recordings made by teachers
  • Printed paper packs produced by the Access & Achievement
  • A Free reading book was gifted to all students through the English Team
  • Reading lessons & ‘myon’ online reading library
  • External online learning packages: Hegarty Maths, Bedrock, Pearson Active Learn
  • Weekly virtual assemblies
  • Pastoral Sessions and Pastoral Foundations

Engagement and feedback

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

  • We expect students to attend the majority of live lessons on a daily basis.
  • If home circumstances and routines don’t allow for this, then students can watch the live lesson recordings &/or work through the Distance learning Powerpoints.
  • We expect students to complete one assignment per subject each week. These assignments are either on Microsoft Teams, Hegarty Maths, Bedrock (English) or Pearson Active Learn (Languages).
  • Some additional quizzes will be built into the live lesson content.
  • We advise students to follow their usual school timetable to support families in developing positive routines for the day. Lessons are between 30 and 40 minutes long to allow for breaks between live lessons. PE & Technology lessons are delivered through Distance Learning PowerPoints. This allows some flexible for families within the timetable structure as these lessons could be worked through at another time if needed.
  • We encourage families to follow the EEF Guidance around positive daily routines and this is displayed on the Distance Learning page of our website.
  • We encourage students and parents to contact the school if they require any assistance with accessing technology or the internet, with logging on or with navigating the online platforms. Daily phone calls are made to support families.

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

  • Math, English & Science live lesson registers will be checked on a daily basis and phone calls home will be made
  • Teachers will pass any engagement concerns & non-attendance concerns to the pastoral team on a weekly basis
  • Non-completion of assignments will be chased up by teachers and the pastoral teams and contact home will be made

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others.

Our approach to feeding back on student work is as follows:

  • Assessment for Learning throughout every live lesson using diagnostic questions, instant polls, the chat function and students responding verbally
  • Self marking quizzes are assigned to students one per week per subject minimum
  • Teachers provide feedback in line with school policy. This feedback with either be whole class feedback or two start and a wish. Whole class feedback will be a live lesson &/or a narrated powerpoint responding to common misconceptions and literacy errors that students have made. Student efforts and achievements will also be celebrated. Two stars and a wish feedback will be provided through Teams in response to a submitted piece of work. Feedback from the teacher will always be developed and acted upon in a feedback workshop led by the teacher. This provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate their progress.
  • Students can also direct message teachers for support and feedback through Teams and through Hegarty Maths.

Additional support for students with particular needs

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some students, for example some students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those students in the following ways:

  • Teachers have been trained on how to effectively differentiate their Distance Learning resources and their live lessons to support the vast majority of students.
  • All students with EHCPs have been provided with personalised paper packs containing wellbeing and literacy resources.
  • A number of selected SEN students were invited to access the in school provision.
  • Literacy paper packs are being provided to students with low literacy levels & students with Dyslexia have been provided with an overlay & coloured exercise books.
  • All students have access to live lessons, Distance Learning PowerPoints and external learning packages (Hegarty Maths, Bedrock, Pearson Active Learn, Myon) to support their learning.
  • EAL live sessions take place on a weekly basis to support these students with their remote learning.
  • Teaching Assistants are an integral part of the in school provision to ensure that all students can access and excel in their learning.
  • We have encouraged all parents/carers of students with SEN to attend the parent event with the Trust Educational Psychologist ‘How to support your teenager’.
