From September 2020 the planned permanent home of CHS South will be Hough End. The brand new specialist 1200 place building will sit within the heart of the Hough End hub, neighbouring The Hough End Centre and Broughton Park Rugby Club and within close proximity to Hough End playing fields, Leisure Centre and our sister school Chorlton High School. The brand new building will be equipped with state of the art, specialist equipment and facilities to support students on their journey to become successful, creative and happy. We are currently working with the Department for Education to finalise the acquisition of the site and would like to thank all of the stakeholders involved in the negotiations and look forward to working together to forge a strong and purposeful relationship in the future. We will provide updates about our site development, both temporary and permanent, via the school website, www.chssouth.org.uk.
Whilst the brand new school is under construction for two years, we will be housed on a temporary site at Chorlton High School. We have met with the DfE who have designed a bespoke site of mobile classrooms to house up to 500 children located on an area of our land behind the school Astroturf. The classrooms will have all of the facilities of a regular Chorlton High School classroom, including specialist equipment where appropriate. Toilets will be located in classroom blocks and will be readily accessible to all students. Outlines of the temporary site plans can be seen below and will be finalised through the planning process in early 2018.
The temporary site will be separate from the main building at Chorlton High School and will operate independently. From opening, CHS South will have its own Headteacher, Senior Staff, Teaching staff, Pastoral staff, Support and Administration staff and will benefit from regular support from Chorlton High School and the wider Trust. CHS South will also have its own Governing Body, which will sit within the broader Prospere Learning Trust governance structure.
We are currently exploring the structure of the CHS South school day and we will consider timings to ensure the most effective and safe use of the school site for both CHS South and Chorlton High School students. Students will access the temporary site through the usual Chorlton High School gate entrances and the reception for parents will be located at the front of Chorlton High School. Currently, we are only planning for CHS South students to access the Chorlton High School building during their school day for their CHS South lunch, which will take place when all Chorlton High students are in lessons. There may be a small number of occasions where we need to access some of Chorlton High’s other facilities as the curriculum dictates, but we don’t intend this to be a regular occurrence; we will also make effective use of the wealth of specialist provision available in the Manchester community to support outstanding delivery whilst in our temporary accommodation. To ensure that CHS South students don’t feel isolated from their Chorlton High School neighbours, we will plan some shared enrichment activities for extended learning experience days and for extracurricular activities. When the time comes to move to our brand new building, we will ensure that all students experience a supported transition which ensures continuity of their learning experience and positions them well to embrace the exciting opportunities the new building will present to them.
